Why won't my international call go through?

If you are trying to place an international call and it will not go through, you should check the following:

  1. Verify that the local number you are calling is correct.
  2. Verify that you are usingthe correct dialing format:.
Exit Code + Country Code + City/Area Code (where applicable) + Local Number

Exit Code - The number assigned to your country used when dialing a number located outside of your country. Every country worldwide is assigned an exit code.

Country Code - The number assigned to the country for incoming calls. Every country worldwide is assigned a country code.

City/Area Code - The number assigned to the city/state for incoming calls.

Local Number - The local number of the person/business you are trying to call.

Get the complete dialing instructions by using our calling codes search.

  3. Make sure that you are NOT dialing the + (plus sign) as listed in the dialing instructions.
  4. Make sure that you leave off the starting "0" in some cases. For example, calling someone in London, UK domestically would be dialed as (020) Local Number, but but if you're calling from another country, you would drop the initial 0 from the City/Area Code and dial 44 + 20 + Local Number

If you have verified that the numbers you are dialing are correct, consider the following:

  1. Verify that your land line or mobile phone allows for International calls.
  2. Verify that the number you are calling accepts international calls. Some numbers block these calls, such as toll free numbers.
  3. If you are using a VoIP service, you may not have to include the Exit Code when calling internationally.
  4. When calling mobile numbers outside of the United States to other countries, an Area/City Code is not always required. Check our mobile codes search to get specific dialing codes for calling a mobile phone internationally.
